After seeing this old advertisement, I might have to change my stance on my nighthawk being a “V6 honda accord of the bike world” ......I am starting to learn it has surprisingly high limits but I didn’t realize how much better the bike is than me. To any newer riders who want to get a nighthawk 650 they are actually very gentle bikes all around but apparently if you thrash them, they gleefully accept it. Just bleed the brakes and make sure you use good gas and they run pretty damn well.
With apologies to Peter Black for saying to not get an old bike because of wear and tear, if you go into this expecting to have to take short rides at first and repair/adjust things, it is a wonderful first bike. And don’t let the displacement fool you - this thing made barely 70hp when new and most probbaly make 60 or less. ALso it weighs like 475 lbs. And the throttle is forgiving. My noob hands are not punished harshly for not being 100% smooth with roll on/roll off. It takes the engine a few moments to build up revs quickly so you don’t go from 30mph to 100 in an instant.
In fact, the only reason why it isn’t the best noob bike is because I think the smaller displacements also got the shaft drive and hydraulic valves and most are 2 cylinders instead of 4 for fewer adjustments and whatnot. But if you want to get into motorcycles, an older nighthawk is a cheap way to get a very solid bike.

A lot of people underestimate what you can do with a “non-sporty” motorcycle. I was regularly grinding pegs and kickstand on my Tiger, even with a full loadout.

I’m still quite far from dragging knees on mine, but I’ve been practicing my low speed turns and whatnot and it takes them on like a boss despite being a heavy little thing. I am aware a ninja 250 or similar would be “better” but at the same time I don’t see how mine is “worse”. It can do it, I know it can, and it doesn’t shake my confidence, it’s just a matter of working towards it. As I said about the power delivery - It is there, and you can easily get it, but the bike will take a moment before doing it so if you messed up or gave it a bit too much or too little, you can correct.

We have an old Yamaha 750 Seca hiding in our shed. I need to learn how to ride it.
